Inati is Freed!
Finally you can anchor at Inati! After much hullabaloo, you may
anchor in Inati and sleep easy at night. And you can once again
find a cache! In a spot trapped by the tides, but somehow protected
from the waves, a cache is stashed. According to the Bellingham
Yacht Club, who lease the uplands of the bay, you may not go ashore
to use their facilities; but the DNR has ruled that the
tidelands--up to the highest high tide--belong to the public! So
cache away. There is an overland route for those with the
permission of the Lummi Island Land Company, although it is not
recommended--it involves fairly challenging climbing. The cache is
a 4 difficulty because obtaining this cache will likely involve
landing a boat on a rocky beach. To stay on the right side of the
landowners, please be sure to land and lash your craft below the
high tide line! ADDED 6/06: Doing further research on the subject
of Inati Bay, I discovered a clarification on the issue of the
beach rights, in the July 8, 2005 issue of the Whatcom Independent.
At a July, 2005 public meeting in Bellingham, Washington Department
of Natural Resources Spokesperson Dave Roberts said that "...the
west shore of the cove is actually a public beach, open to all to
come ashore." So, again, you may not use BYC's facilities, but you
may land and walk the beach...and seek the cache. Enjoy! And on a
sad note: environmentalists beware. Lummi Land Co. has begun doing
substantial cuts on the south end of the island. While they haven't
cut to the bay (it is still quite beautiful) they are using Inati
as a staging area for barging out their timber. (I suspect this is
the real reason that the public is being shooed away.) While this
is at least the third complete cut of most of the
island--effectively making it a timber farm with eagle nests--it
can be difficult to watch the (largely recovered) ecosystem being
clearcut and turned into a mess of mud, slash and spilled hydraulic
oil. :( 4-11-09 New Cache Container. Please note, that public
access to the tidelands is NOT a popular public policy with
Bellingham Yacht Club members! If they know there is a cache
drawing the public to this area, they will likely muggle it. Please
be stealthy! On the black cylinder, one side is tightened on with a
clamp, and one is friction-fit. Please pull only the friction-fit
side off. Please recover the cache with rocks, and leave the rocks
inside the cylinder; this will help keep it from floating... If you
are approaching the cache overland, or are traversing the beach on
foot, this cache is easiest to find at mid or lower tide.
Enjoy!
