Geocache Description:

This cache is a dark green ammo box hanging on a nail in a tree 3 feet above the ground. (What do you think happened to this tree?)

Tamaracouta Scout Reserve (TSR) has the distinction of being the longest continuously-operating Scout camp in the world, having opened its doors in 1912. The Scouting movement was founded in England by Lord Robert Baden-Powell in 1907, and came to Canada in 1908. The camp is situated on 1,000 acres of land around Lake Tamaracouta in the Laurentian Mountains, 60 miles from Montreal.

TSR was host to 2,000 participants at the Central Canada Jamboree in 2005, CCJAM, and will welcome an estimated 8,000 guests to the centennial celebration of Scouting, the Canadian Jamboree, CJ'07, in the summer of 2007.

Tamracouta has a full year-round program, and has been home base to generations of Scouts. Its facilities include a set of 6 cabooses, sitting on wheels and rails, which have been converted for use as cabins: TSR: "Tamaracouta Stationary Railway". It also has the longest covered picnic table in the world.

Scouting history buffs might be interested to check out the bronze cast of Baden-Powell's footprint at the entrance to the Longhouse, the main reception building.

Please note: since this is a facility for children, for security reasons, access to the interior of the site is restricted. Please respect this necessary rule. The geocache is near the road, easily accessible to the general public.

This geocache was placed on Earth Day, April 22, 2006, during an outdoor skills camp for Scout leaders. One of the training sessions was on GPS, and part of the exercise was to find this geocache.

The initial contents were: Earth ball, Cubaree 2003 patch, cop car, skateboard, marbles, Winter Cubbing badge, novel, pink bowl, phone, good luck knot.

Enjoy!
