This cache is located in King William County, near the Mattaponi River.
In 1782 my 5th great-grandfather purchased this place and named it after the biblical city spared by God’s wrath when He destroy the nearby cities of Sodom and Gomorrah. He named it this because it was thought by some at the time that the nearby village was the wickedest place on earth…knowing the area now, it’s hard to believe.
The original property consisted of 1035.75 acres and over the next 200 years there were many family divisions, sales and repurchases. In 1987 a descendant deeded the remaining 373.5 acres to the State Forestry Department so that it would be preserved. Some of my family will always be here.
The present home was built in 1901 replacing previous homes which had burned and the surrounding outbuildings which include a smokehouse, kitchen, servant’s quarters and dairy are much older (circa 1820s) than the house and have not been restored.
If you take Route 360, take a left onto Route 608 (Upshaw Road) immediately after turning onto Route 600 (River Road)…you’ll know where to go from there. If the drive through gate is closed, as the sign on the info hut says, walk on in. It is always open during daylight hours, but it’s hit and miss as to whether or not anyone will be ‘home’.
Cache is a traditional 30 cal. Ammo can and when place contained a mini Mag-lite for the FTF, a first aid kit, 12’ tape measure, a deck of cards, a mini race car, a carabiner pen (for trade) and log book w/pen.
This is our first cache placement, any feedback would be welcome.
