On Earth Day this year several Geocachers and other volunteers gathered at the Northwest end of Casa Grande Mountain to do our part in cleaning up our “playground”. We decided too late to do this, so we were unable to post that activity as an official CITO event. We were so successful in this effort that we would like to continue our work, this time on the South end of the mountain on Saturday, May 13.
Around Casa Grande, there is no area with greater concentration of caches than Casa Grande Mountain (20 in the immediate vicinity), so we are doing ourselves a favor with this effort. Your participation is greatly appreciated!
Directions: Exit I-8 at Trekell Road (Exit 174); go South to Hanna Road. At this intersection Isom Road bears off to the Southeast. Follow Isom Road to the south end of the mountain and turn North into the cleanup area. This is Henness Road on the maps, but may not be marked. The posted coordinates have been scaled from Google Maps, so may be a little off. The spot where we will meet is a large open area with a garage-size or larger concrete pad (clearly visible on Google Earth).
The project starts at 7AM, but you can arrive anytime after that and we’ll find a job for you. We expect to finish in 3-4 hours. We will furnish bags. Please come prepared for the desert; i.e., good shoes, hat, gloves, sunscreen, and drinking water. If you have FRS radios, bring them. If you have a choice of vehicles, use the pickup or 4X4; much of our task is along good desert "Jeep trails" in the low-country. Terrain rating is 2.5 or less. Temperatures are warm, so desert critters will be active....BEWARE!
Bring your own drinks. We hope to have some kind of a feed when we are finished, but don’t have any specific plans at this time. More later. Bring your GPSr for an exercise in precision. We will each flag the “zero point” for a given set of coordinates to understand variations in readings. Travel bug trading is welcome. We’ll have an official logbook for the event. No promises, but it wouldn’t be surprising to see a brand new cache show up for the event. They just seem to GROW out here!
For the Geocachers of Casa Grande Area……we look forward to seeing you all!
UPDATE 5/10/06 - 1) bring lawn chairs for yourself for breaks, feed time, whatever. 2) We will be on FRS Channel 6, with no special encoding. 3) IMPORTANT! When you enter the area, you will undoubtedly notice a dumpster and lots of people; that is NOT OUR GROUP! DO NOT STOP OR SIGN UP THERE. Proceed North taking the left split in the trail just past the dumpster for about a quarter mile to the posted coordinates. Look for a Blue Chevy Blazer.
UPDATE 5/11/06 - The lunch plan is now in place. We may be finished working sooner, but lunch will be served at 11AM at our original gathering place; ham salad sandwiches, chips, and cookies. Bring your own drinks.
