Geocache Description:

Last in the series of “THINGS THAT BITE”

ONZA

The Onza, often called the mystery cat is wolflike and separate from the other two large cats, the Puma and the Jaguar.

The early settlers of the Northwest noted the presence of the black, wild wolflike cat-with long ears, a long narrow body and long thin legs. It is remarkable for its fierceness.

In 1982, for the first time, Cryptozoologists formally recognized its existence in the Northwest. However, consistent scientific indifference to the Onza is puzzling. Even though one was trapped alive recently, officials expressed no interest to look at it.

While Cougar and large cat sightings on Camano Island are not frequent, there have been increased missing dogs and cats reported and there is no rabbit problem.

The threat to the survival of wild animals is the loss of their habitat due to development of towns, cities, and farms. When people move into their habitat, animals are often viewed as a threat to pets, livestock, gardens or humans, and so they are killed. We can protect them by preserving their habitat and by learning to live with them.

Keep in mind that cats are important predators that control populations of potential pests like rodents.
