Geocache Description:

Will you hit the Brick Wall?

Prominent brickworks and brickmakers The Goodsell family played an important role in the early history of brickmaking in New South Wales and in the development of the industry. The family arrived in New South Wales in 1838 and settled in Newtown in 1848, taking over a brickworks in John Street, Newtown. The Goodsells were responsible for several important innovations which changed the character of brick-making. After Goodsell Snr established the first brick steam works in New South Wales, his son, Henry Wesley Goodsell, in conjunction with Waterloo brickmaker Alfred Tye, produced the first machine-made bricks in 1871. Henry defied convention by making the first shale-plastic bricks. Up to this time shale was believed to have no commercial value in brickmaking. The machine-produced bricks soon proved very popular and other brickyards installed brickmaking machines. The Goodsell business was sold and became Speare's Brickworks in 1891. Reminiscence of those early days are evident in the heritage listed chimney stacks and kiln's at the north-west corner of Sydney Park.

PLEASE NOTE: There is no need to climb on any of the buildings or structures. All waypoints and the cache can be accessed from the ground. Note: The waypoints are not in the door ways to the kilns. 2 waypoints take you to the cache. The difficulty of 3 is for the sneaky waypoint placement, designed to drive the most ardent and seasoned geocacher up the Brick Wall.
