Geocache Description:

This cache is located near the entrance to a nature trail managed and maintained by a local college field station. The cache is a 1.7 qt. Lock and Lock container placed near the head of the trail and can be accessed from the trail to avoid leaving the trail and disturbing the area or possibly wandering into poison ivy. Trees overhead may make it difficult to get a good reading on your GPS.

A brochure is included in the cache which explains about the plants and wildlife that can be seen along the trail. After you have located the cache you can hike the nature trail. The terrain at the beginning of the trail is somewhat steep going down to the lake. The trail is a short loop with a wooden walkway over a shallow cove. There is no railing on the walkway so parents will want to keep a close eye or hand on their kids. Please do not disturb any vegetation or wildlife as they are all part of the ongoing study of the ecosystem. It is best to stay on the trail as there is poison ivy in the bush and places with deep mud. If you use the trail guide brochure please be sure to replace it back in the cache when you leave. You may want to visit the nature trail several times during the year to note the changes that take place with the seasons. I think I spotted a bald eagle overhead when I was there today. They fly so high it's hard to tell, but I'm pretty sure he had a white head and tail.
This should be an easy cache, but the true treasure is not to be found in the cache container, but in looking at all the animals and plants found on the short hike throughout this lakeside habitat.

Please note the sign posted at the trailhead that neither the State University nor the Oneonta Foundation Corp. are responsible for your safety and that visitors enter at their own risk.

Cache may not be accessible in winter.

Note to hikers: The field station manages over 2500 acres of property with trailways. If you want to find out more about exploring these trails you can contact the field station at 607/547-8778.
