Original landing site of the Lunenburg founding families.
In the beginning...........
A little park nobody sees...
The Foreign Protestants(relatives), as they've been called, were fleeing tough times when about 2230 of them left their homes in Switzerland, France, and parts of Germany in the early 1750s and landed in Halifax.
In June 7, 1753, about 1453 of these settlers were transferred to Lunenburg to establish the community.
WHO WERE THE FOREIGN PROTESTANTS
In 1749 the city of Halifax, N.S. was founded. British settlers were not attracted to this rugged frontier town, fearing the French and the Mi kmaq. The British Government developed a plan to further foil the French in Louisburg and attract settlers.
From 1750 - 1752, 3000 industrious people were lured to N.S. by the promise of free land, food, tools, and religious freedom. They became known as The Foreign Protestants.
In June, 1753 a large group of these individuals arrived in Lunenburg, N.S. to further develop British Settlement. These people and their descendants can still be found in Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Bridgewater, the County of Lunenburg, throughout Nova Scotia, the rest of Canada and the United States
