Geocache Description:

A surprise in store

(Note: This is an update on the previous notes due to changes on the site.)

This cache has had an unfortunate history. It went missing and was replaced in a different nearby location. But that too has gone (mugglers? foxes? Dogs?) and we have now put it back (in a smaller box) in its original location. We hope it remains safe this time. The clue to the final location co-ordinate has been changed, so make sure you are reading this later version.

A few miles to the north-west of Swindon is Purton Stoke. We suggest that you park at the far western end of the village. Do NOT drive on down the Private Road at the end, although it is down that same road (a public bridleway) that you will set off on your walk.

There is a surprise in store for you when you reach the first co-ordinate, about a quarter of a mile along the road. We will not spoil things by telling you what it is, but AFTER you have seen it and get back home you can find a lot about its fascinating history on web page (visit link)
One thing is certain, very few people outside the area have even heard of it, let alone seen it.

At the first co-ordinate is an inscription on the 'surprise', and you can get closer to read it more easily (and to get a closer look at the surprise itself) by going through the gate. We understand that the owner is quite happy for anyone interested to go through the gate and to inspect the building. But do remember that the 'surprise' is private property, so treat it with great respect and do not wander off into adjacent areas. However, just in case the gate is locked be on the safe side take some low-powered binoculars to read the inscription. The 'surprise' is being refurbished and the original double gates are being replaced by a single gate - this has necessitated a change to Clue C below.

The coded co-ordinates for the actual cache are:

AB.DC.7BB N
00B.AD.0DD W

A = Number of lines on inscription
B = Number of letters V on inscription
C = Double the number of letters on the white gate (i.e. the gate with letters on it).
D = Number of letters R on inscription

Please close the gate again as you leave. Turn right and carry on along the road until you came to a track on your left. Go down there. The final stretch might get a little muddy, but only in really wet weather.

Please hide the cache carefully afterwards under plenty of sticks and things. This is especially important in the winter months when the undergrowth dies back.

It has been reported that water sometimes gets into the box - so please be careful to make sure that the lid is properly closed afterwards. Thanks. If it is a little damp, please wipe it dry if you are able.

PS. By the way, popeye9299 reports 25 July 2009 that TB White Rock Peak is not in the cache. Odd, because we didn't know it was there anyway. But just in case you are hoping to find it you will have to look elsewhere than Get Well Soon :-)
