The A11 used to run from London to Norwich via such places as
Epping, Harlow, Bishop's Stortford, Newport, Newmarket, Thetford
and Attleborough. At various points it's been bypassed, upgraded
and replaced, and it is no longer a continuous route - the majority
has been replaced by the M11 from London to J9 near Saffron
Walden.
This cache is placed just off what used to the be A11 - the A11
was upgraded here and a whole new dual carriageway was built just
north of the old route, and the old route was downgraded to a local
road. The nearby now-useless roundabout (with the Shell garage on it) was the old
junction with the Cambridge-Haverhill A1307, and when this was
replaced with a grade-separated junction, the new road was made to
bypass the houses and other buildings on the stretch of road where
the cache is.
And a good job too! The little bridge over the River Granta
where the cache is hidden is quite quaint, with a leafy shaded area
and a small weir. You can play pooh sticks from one side to the
other and imagine times gone by....who wants a noisy dual
carriageway anyway?
On to the cache - it's a small clip-lock container with some
magnets - that should be a good enough clue. When placed, the GPS
only reported 25-foot accuracy, so you might have the odd issue -
there are some trees therewith dense foliage. You won't need to
cross the road from the new cycleway and it's accessible by wheelchair - that's another
clue for you :) Keep a close watch on children and dogs.
Happy hunting!
