I had originally wanted to place a cache directly above Cat Canyon,
overlooking US-6, but access by vehicle was just too difficult.
After two trips on two different days, I finally found a good place
for this cache. From here you can see directly through Cat Canyon,
and you can drive to within 500' of the cache.
Use the following waypoints to reach the cache. You'll need at
least a high-clearance vehicle, if not a 4x4.
#1 N 39° 32.999' W 110° 39.810' - Turn south off US-6
#2 N 39° 32.819' W 110° 39.852' - Turn left--the road goes
south and then curves east
#3 N 39° 32.293' W 110° 39.001' - Turn left and work your
way north toward the cache
Turn #2 is the most important, because if you continue straight
instead of turning, you'll be on a private road (according to
Carbon County
GIS).
There are a lot of fossils in the area, mostly simple clam-type
shells, but there are a few cephalopod shells.
There's a lot of wildlife to be seen in the area. I saw antelope
and deer on the drive to the cache. While I was stopped
about a mile away from the cache to take some pictures I saw a baby
snake. I also spooked a cottontail rabbit out from under some rocks
about five feet away from me, and it scared me more than the snake!
