The Niantic Boardwalk Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Mr. Beanz: It was almost 3 years ago to the day when I placed this, my first cache...and it's held up pretty well after 100 finds (and only 2 DNF's)!!

But when the parking lot went under some renovation recently, the cache was put on hold...and since the parking lot got some major overhaul, I thought this cache was due for some as well. Plus a new cache encourages previous finders to return! So stay tuned for a new and improved cache here! Slightly new location, and it will hold trade items!

Geocache Description:

East Lyme is small Connecticut town along the Long Island Sound shoreline. It is very similar to the more popular tourist hot-spots of Old Saybrook and Mystic in terms of quaintness, but without the “craziness” during the summer months. Plus it has many spectacular views of the Sound (including beaches) that are freely open to the public.

Location Background:

This first location I’d like for people to discover is my favorite place in town to visit and is one of the newest additions to Niantic. Unfortunately, storm surges from this past winter have damaged portions of the boardwalk, so it isn’t in the best of shape, but the majority of it’s mile length can be (and still is) enjoyed.

Finding the Cache:

Take exit 74 off of I-95. A right off the exit will put you on Rt. 161 heading towards the water. You’ll see the Sound once you get to the end of this road (Intersection of Main Street in downtown Niantic). Turn right and you're on your way to the cache.

A portion of the parking lot where the cache is located is free all year around, but on nice days you may find yourself parking on the street.

There is a passage (aptly named, "Hole in the Wall") which allows safe passage underneath the train tracks where you'll find the boardwalk (a mile stretch to the East, the Cooker cache is to the West). If you have the time, take a walk along the boardwalk, enjoy its views of the Sound and read its multitude of educational plaques along the way. There is free beach access along the elevated boardwalk portion.
