This cache will take you to an interesting church of St.Elisabeth also called The Blue Church. This church has no famous history to account for but it is one of the most visited churches in town. It is all due to its extraordinary looks. The church is painted blue with a fine blue mosaic decoration and a blue roof tiles. It was built according to a project by Edmund Lechner in the so-called Budapest secession style as a symbolic mausoleum of the empress Elisabeth (known as Sissi), the wife of the Austrian emperor Franz Josef I. One can find some paintings depicting the empress Elisabeth inside the church. Over the main entrance there is a mosaic of st.Elisabeth of Durin, the patron saint of the poor and the church as well. She is also depicted on the main altar.

The project originated around the year 1907, 700 years after saint Elisabeth was born. The foundation stone was laid on the 23rd of August 1909 and the church was finished in 1913.

Today, the blue church is a popular sight visited by tourists and locals alike. Quite a few couples decide to get married in this church. The ceremonies take place here every Saturday.

Pecularities:

  • the tip of the church's tower has the form of the crown of the kings of Hungary
  • Yet another church and a monastery in Bratislava have the St.Elisabeth as their patron saint
  • the statue of St.Elisabeth by Norbert Sadei can be found in park near the Bratislava castle
  • another statue of St.Elisabeth by A.Rigele from 1907 is to be found in front of the Prepost palace
  • Along with the church a secondary school and a vicarage were built on the other side of the road
  • note the memorial commemorating the unborn children situated at the cross-road

Note: Admission to the church is possible during a mass or marital ceremonies (or a couple of minutes after)
