Geocache Description:

Henrik Stampe overtog stedet i 1826.

The Manor House - Nysø

Nysø manor house marks a milestone in Danish history and architecture. After the introduction of absolute monarchy in Denmark in 1660, the middle class began to make serious inroads into the preserves of the nobility. Nysø, for example, was built by a mayor's son from Præstø, merchant Jens Lauridsen, who amassed so much land that in 1671-73 it became an estate with a fine manorhouse complex. It was the first manor house in Denmark in the baroque style. Most eye-catching is a central ressaut with a triangular fronton above four pilasters on the south side facing the garden.

After having changed hands on several occasions, Nysø was bought in 1800 by Privy Councillor Henrik Stampe. He strove to establish a barony, Stampenborg, a venture which his son Holger eventually brought to a successful conclusion. Henrik Stampe took over the place in 1826. He was married to Christine Dalgas, and it was she who turned Nysø into one of the great cultural meeting places of the age.

The greatest role in this connection was played by the world-famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen, who - after returning from Italy in 1838 - spent the last six years of his life at Nysø. Apart from a study, he also had a studio in the garden, called 'Vølunds Værksted', which was opened by Grundtvig in 1839. Other prominent artists and writers who came to Nysø during these years included Hans Christian Andersen, Oehlenschläger, Ingemann, P.C. Skovgård and Marstrand.

In 1926, the Thorvaldsen Collection opened at Nysø, where it is still possible to see a unique collection of plaster sculptures, reliefs, sketches and drafts - most of them done during the world-famous sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen's stay at Nysø.

Taking the privacy into concideration, the cache is located approximately 500 mtr. from the manor house, in the beautiful nature right up to Præstø Fjord.
The manor house and the surrounding buildings are not open to the public, although the beautiful park and Thorvaldsens Collection, are both open against a small admission fee.
