Geocache Description:

The cache is a small tupperware like container with a blue lid and wrapped in a black plastic dustbin bag. Much of the path is still well surfaced and very easy to walk on.

Black Shuck, the wild pagan dog of the Saxons has frequently been spotted around this area. A huge shaggy creature with great shining eyes glowing red and yellow with fire. He is reputed to growl and snarl at those who see him. Sometime in the 1950's a Mrs.Connie May had been visiting friends in Cambridge Road. It was very late when she left and she had refused the offer of an escort home. There was no street lighting and she began to feel uneasy. Suddenly a large black dog was walking beside her. The dog walked her all the way home only stopping when they reached her gate . Where it sat down as she went inside and then disappeared as quickly as it came.

Black Shuck is said to haunt the area that runs between Witchford Aerodrome and the A10 Cambridge Road and is often seen at dusk.

The cache is laid near the site of the saxon settlement named Cratendune which was as large as Witcham or Little Thetford. The land nearby which is now Bedwell Hey Farm was given to Saxon Princess Ethedreda by her first husband Tondbert. The monastery built by Ethedreda in 673 may have been on this site so a saxon dog would feel comfortable here.

Suggested parking is in Bedwell Hey Lane that runs past Witchford Village Hall, from there it is about one and a half miles to the cache site along the bridal path.
The path takes you around the Witchford Aerodrome site some of which is now the Lancaster Way Industrial Estate. The rest has been reverted to farmland. Rumour has it that the spirits of airmen in uniform, walking in twos or threes can be seen or heard at dusk.

Go at dusk if you dare!
