Once there, an easy short walk is required to get the cache.
This cache is located near an internationally renowned archaeological site, jointly managed by QPWS, Queensland Museum and Winton Shire Council. Access is easiest from the town of Winton, which will involve 110kms of bitumen and gravel roads. While access is possible in a conventional car with care in the dry, it is much more comfortable in a 4 wheel drive. Not advisable to attempt it in the wet or after major rains. While access to the park is free (minimal facilities – toilets, tables, walk) guided tours of the protected part of the site are available, with tickets purchased at the site, or as part of a package from other attractions in and around Winton. Some tour operators in Winton also offer organised tours and travel to the site, during the winter months.
The cache is a small plastic lunchbox, which can be accessed from the short walking track the circles the site. I was hoping to keep the cache themed, but as I don’t foresee many visitors, we will have to see how we go.
