Geocache Description:

Reiertangen Fyr is situated on Søndre Sandø in the Hvaler archipelago.

Lighthouse Close to Border is situated on Søndre Sandø in the Hvaler archipelago. The distance across the open waters to the Swedish Bohuslän mainland is approximately 1 km, and the area has been subject to a lot of rivalry between Norway and Sweden through the ages. Most famous is Tordenskjold’s defeat of the Swedish force in the naval Battle of Dynekilen, which took place on 8 July 1716.

During World War 2 the lighthouse position was a starting point for refugees’ final crossing to safety in Sweden.

The view is wide and open, stretching from the Swedish Koster islands in the south to the Halden fjord in the north.

The Lighthouse

If you don’t come by private boat, the easiest access to Søndre Sandø is by ferryboat from Skjærhalden. From the Gravningsund harbour follow the signpost to ants’ market place (Maurtorvet), and further to Reiertangen fyr.

Words of caution: A wooden staircase on the marked Reiertangen fyr-path is in a very bad condition. Close to the lighthouse in the direction of the open water the walls are very steep.

The cache is placed about 30 meters in the northern direction from the lighthouse The cache is a waterproof box with initial content;
