This is the latest in a continuing series of hides that I place in
Berkeley parks that don't have caches (and are eligible for
caches). I wanted to do some more hides; Berkeley has many parks
without caches... seemed like a good match. I am seeing a lot of
Berkeley's smaller parks, and noticing things that I might not have
seen otherwise; perhaps you hunters will appreciate this, too.
Completed in 1984 and currently enjoying some kind of unusual
status where it is administered by nearby Alta Bates hospital,
Bateman Mall Park is a nice little neighborhood park with a tot
play area and a nice big grassy lawn. Please note: Alta Bates
security locks this park at sunset -- or sometimes even a
little bit ahead of time.
Historical note, respecting our fallen comrade,
motogrrl: at the time that I was gathering coords for averaging for
this hide (Apr-May 2006), it was going to supplant GCV349 as
closest to motogrrl's house. I was looking forward to placing
this before she took her next trip out of town.
She knew that I was working the neighborhood, and even
referenced this spot specifically, when she found what was (at
the time) the
nearest
cache to her. This is one of three hides that I was working on
that had motogrrl connections, when she was killed. It saddens me
to think that she won't find this hide. :-C
Berkeley parks are open from 6am to 10pm (unless otherwise
posted). Please represent responsible Geocaching, and respect the
rules of the park.
The cache itself is a camo-taped small cylinder, appx 3" diam x
4" tall, about 1 pint in capacity. Please exercise stealth; the
difficulty is partially muggle-related.
You may find parking for some of this series to be somewhat
challenging. I encourage you to find out how
bikeable/walkable/transit-able (most of) Berkeley's parks can be.
(The ones that are hardest to transit/walk to have the easiest
parking; funny how that works out. %-} )
