Geocache Description:

This cache is located on a 7 mile circular walk around Halvergate Marshes following Weaver’s Way, (a long footpath leading from Great Yarmouth to Cromer) passing by Breydon Water and running along the River Yare. As this is a 4 hour walk and you will need boots, waterproofs (even on a nice day) and refreshments for the journey. An OS map will also help- I used OL 40 Explorer but Landranger 134 will do.

By car, from the A47 turn off at the bad bend on the Acle Straight (opp PH)toward Halvergate. At the right hand-bend turn left (sign-posted Weaver’s Way) and park along the
verge at rough location N52 36.169 E001 35.506 making sure vehicles can still get by. There is also the Berney Arms Station but you will have to find out about the train times yourself. The following bit is for your help only. If you are a competent map reader and feel confident then you have no need to read on. Have Fun!!

The path is popular and clearly sign-posted Weaver’s Way all the way round. We have however taken some waypoints from time to time to help you get to the bootie. From where you park, follow the footpath east, down the track, over stiles and past farms towards Howard’s Drainage Mill (it’s a windmill without sails to most people) located N52 36.406 E001 38.110. Carry on along the footpath to where you meet a concrete road. You will also find a W/W sign here (location N52 36.342 E001 39.283.) Turn Right along the concrete road till you come to the train track at N52 36.253 E001 39.468. Take caution when crossing and remember to always close the gate. If you climb the small bank and peer over the wall you will see Breydon Water. The wall is also a good place to sit and have a cup of tea. Keeping Breydon Water on your left, walk along the top of the bank, counting down the meters to the cache at N52 35.826 E001 39.133. It should be quickly located as I would never send you on a 7 mile walk without making the actual find easy. Carry on along the bank towards the Berney Arms Pub passing Beatrice the Bench at N52 35. 509 E001 38.781. (Pub located at N52 35.310 E001 38.495). You are now heading towards Berney Arms Windmill, said to be the finest mill on the broads, carry on past the windmill and turn right and down the steps at N52 35.183 E001 38.271. From here, head towards the white posts, through three kissing gates and towards the white gate in the distance. Go through (closing afterwards) and you will see Berney Railway Station on your right. From here you need to pay great attention to the green Weaver’s Way signs as you will cross many meadows, see many cows and sheep and climb or go through many gates. To help you along there is a big W/W sign at N52 35.643 E001 36.841, from there you should head towards a wooden bridge at N52 35.818 E001 36.261. If you go wrong don’t worry, you will find out soon enough as there will be a dyke in your way without a bridge to cross it. Carry on, along the track back to your parked car.

If you are super keen on bird watching and don’t mind retracing your steps there is parking to be found at the Asda Car Park in Great Yarmouth Location N52 36.732 E001 43.099.Simply follow the footpath, round Breydon Water to the cache site and back the same way. We recommend taking a telescope if you have one as the waders can be quite far out. Avocets, Oystercatchers, Little Egrets, Cormorants and Plovers to name but a few can be seen most of the time.

This cache is fantastic for wildlife, birdwatchers and keen walkers alike. We say again there is no easy route to the cache so start early, take correct clothing for the time of year (not forgetting lotion in the summer) and enjoy one of the most remote and baron parts of East Anglia with the added bonus of a cache to help inspire you. We hope you enjoy finding it as much as we did placing it. Have fun!!
