Why hide a cache here?
A better question: Why is this random section here in the middle of an otherwise-straight N-S road?
The answer to these questions comes from the United States Public Lands Survey System. The system was designed to section off portions of land to facilitate its sale to the public. You can learn more about this system at the Web link above.
Whenever one attempts to project a three-dimensional image (i.e. the Earth) onto a two-dimensional one (i.e. a map), distortions will occur. To account for these distortions, periodic adjustments were made to sections of the land.
Simply put, the cache is hidden along one of these adjustments. So, the next time you drive down a country road and encounter one of these inexplicable turns, you will know who to thank.
