Geocache Description:

This is the seventh of a series of caches located in the Riverland designed to highlight some of the places that are worth a visit and our recollections of time spent there.

The Paringa Bridge is a Lifting Span Bridge. Twice a day at 9:30am and 2:30pm one span is raised to allow larger river vessels to pass under. The bridge was opened in 1927 and at that time only carried rail traffic. During the 1956 floods, Renmark was cut off by water and the railway and bridge was the only access left to get people and supplies in and out of the town. The road you are currently standing on was the original location and height of the main road from Renmark to Paringa (hence it going underwater). Later the bridge was extended outwards to cater for road traffic and the causeway was constructed from the bridge to Renmark which now keeps the road out of the high waters reach. Ironically, the railway was later ripped out but the rail passage was replaced by a cycle and walking path and a walk over the bridge is recommended. This is the first of two caches we have placed today to mark Rabbitto's 25th wedding Anniversary. For Rabbitto, this bridge holds a very special place in our hearts as I proposed one night in the warm light of this very bridge. (It was on the other side of the river but there are no good cache hiding places on that side). Cold Freeze and Bazzars more know the bridge as the place to get stopped by the lifting span when you are running late. The cache is located about 200m from the bridge in bushland. From this point, you will have a beautifully framed view of the bridge. You can drive to about 3 metres from the cache, however, this road is a dirt road and can vary in condition depending on recent weather and how long since the council graded it. If you don't want to risk it, you may want to park in the parking bay next to the bridge and about 180m from the cache. This will mean crossing the main road (which should be no problem as the speed limit is only 30 here) and walking down a short slippery slope.
