Geocache Description:

The above posted co-ordinates are for the Cenotaph in downtown Wilberforce (The Geocaching Capital of Canada) and are not the actual location of the cache. The Cenotaph is located right beside the Municipal Office and there is a children's play area with picnic tables and a pretty park. Public washrooms are in the Municipal Office which are open during business hours. Parking is available.

The original Cenotaph was constructed by local members made from cement and rocks in the early 1970's in rememberance of our Veterans. It was in dire need of repair so a "Cenotaph Fund" was created in 2000. The unveiling of the new Cenotaph was held in May of 2001. It represents the respect and the recognition of those who survived the wars and of the memories for the comrades left behind.Some of the original rocks were placed in the beautiful flower gardens at the Legion which were planted and are maintained by volunteer members.
Now, onto the cache....Take the first three words and the sixth word that appear on the Cenotaph inscription. Then use this formula to find the co-ordinates for the cache (the letters aren't in the correct order):

E= 5 or 1 or 1
L= 1 or 7 or 4
R= 7
G= 8
W= 9

When you arrive at your destination the cache is placed in a small clear plastic container located outside of the building.It contains some Legion ribbons, a Canada Pin, a Canadian quarter with Legionaries on it, some poppies, a Legion decal and Walter Wilberforce the Travel Bug.
Some words about our Legion:
The Wilberforce Branch 624 of the Royal Canadian Legion was initially organized through the efforts of James Outram. He was fortunate in securing the interest of the late Jack Taylor and they contacted local men known to have seen service with the Armed Forces. Having finally obtained enough signatures the organization was officially recognized on April 14, 1973 by Field Organizer of the Ontario Command, Reg Cleater. The Charter was presented on Aug. 25th, 1973. Meetings were held in the Fire Hall. First election of officers resulted in James Outram being chosen as President. Meetings were held once a month at the Fire Hall. Money raising activities were planned, such as the popular dances that took place at Harcourt Hall. On September 5th, 1974 the Zone 6F Annual Drumhead Service was held in the Wilberforce Arena.In June of the same year the Presentation of Colours took place in the Arena. On March 17, 1975 a decision was reached to purchase property and a building that would be used as a Legion Hall. Repairs and renovations were needed and money for this purpose was raised. A Ladies Auxiliary was formed and has remained active in fund raising over the years and continues to give valuable support to the organization. The Auxiliary now caters to weddings, special events, celebrations, funeral lunches and has a very successful "brunch" the second Sunday of every month (everyone welcome). Bingo games at one time were operated once a week. For several years the Legion sponsored a successful Fiddle and Step Dance Contest. Another annual event was the catering to motorcyclists for the Cordoury Enduro in the fall. In November the Poppy drive brings in money that is used to assist Veterans. Our Youth and Education Chairperson organizes the Public Speaking which takes part in the selection of the finest essays and poems submitted by Wilberforce public school children.
Douglas Hatch was a local resident in the area and was very generous in donating to Branch 624. Not only did he contribute funds to our Branch but also the Twin Anti Aircraft Guns which proudly sit in front of our Legion. In 1988 the name was changed to "Douglas C Hatch, Branch 624."
In recent years our Legion has acquired new chairs and a beautiful ceramic floor has been installed throughout which has resulted in a pleasant club room, a banquet hall with an attached kitchen, pool room, washrooms and a bar. In this friendly atmosphere, many social activities are enjoyed. Thanks to another grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation in 2015, we were able to renovate and upgrade the washrooms, replace doors and purchase and install a new generator which provides electricity for the community in the event of a power outage.
Our Legion is open to the public so if you need a break you can stop in for a cold or hot drink. On the 1st Friday of each month there is a Ham & Scalloped Potato Dinner from 5-7 pm.. On the 3rd Friday there is a Spaghetti Dinner from 5-7 pm. The Ladies Auxiliary serves a wonderful breakfast on the 2nd Sunday of each month from 9 am -12 pm.
