Old Cemeteries - Pawnell (Rasmus) Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Wis Kid: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

Rasmus is located in the Pawnell Cemetery in Downsville, Wisconsin.

Rasmus Larsen was a private in Company H, the 28th Wisconsin Infantry during the Civil War. He died fighting for the Union and was buried here in Pawnell. Because of the color of his skin he could not be buried in the main part of the cemetery. Rasmus was put to rest at the far eastern end of the cemetery - all alone. His grave is marked with GAR (Grand Army of the Republic) medal and US flag. The coordinates listed are for his headstone, GAR medal and flag. The cache is located 12-14' east-southeast (120 degrees) of his headstone. (Sorry, but I couldn't get accurate coordinates at the actual cache location.)

Pawnell Cemetery is a very old cemetery and was neglected for many years. About 12 years ago someone took an interest in cleaning it up and trying to plot the cemetery. Many tombstones have been damaged or are missing altogether. Along the north side of the cemetery you will see many broken headstones and parts of headstones. There are many graves that are unmarked. I don't think there are any recent graves here - they are all very old. The headstones that are still standing are interesting to read. Laurence Robinson died in 1864, Flora Smith in 1866, Mary Creaser in 1865, Gertrude Berg in 1872, EO Turnet in 1872 and on and on. The majority of the headstones are pre-1900.
