Geocache Description:

This cache is another in a series I have placed along the old West Shore Railroad. The cache container is a cammo. folgers coffee can. The terrain is flat and easy with only a minimum of bushwacking required at the final. This is a two part multi.

Early in the 1800's a small stream ran easterly from Byron through a natural valley fed by springs which formed an ideal spot for a mill pond. A dam was built to hold the water back and a large wooden mill structure was built at the east end of the pond.
In 1884 the West Shore Railroad had come through and purchased the mill property for the purpose of obtaining water rights for the steam locomotives.
A large commercial ice house at the south bank of the pond was filled each winter. Later the ice was transported to Buffalo for the Webster Citizen's Ice Company. This provided winter employment for many local men. A saw mill and bottling works were also in operation at the southeast end of the dam.
The mill pond, sometimes referred to as "Mirror Lake", was a beauty spot and recreation center, greatly enjoyed by the surrounding community. It was popular for swimming, boating, fishing, ice-skating and picnics. A small island in the center of the pond was the focus of many activities including the Fourth of July fireworks.
When the pond acquired the nickname "Mud City" is not known but it has been lovingly referred to as that for as long as anyone can remember.
Please take the time to sit back and relax around this peaceful spot, enjoy the scenery, the wild life and the serenity. The Kiwanis organization has a nice pavilion and picnic tables for your disposal. Bring a picnic lunch.
