i was chief of the nez perce for over thirty years during the latter part of the nineteenth century. we lived in the wallowa valley in NE oregon. the U.S. government tried to force us off our land and move us to a reservation. in 1877 general howard sent the cavalry to round us up. we escaped and made a dash for the canadian border. we resisted the army troops for over three months, traveling seventeen hundred miles across oregon, washington, idaho and montana and came within forty miles of the border. but, after a devastating five-day battle during freezing weather conditions with no food or blankets, i formally surrendered. i stated "from where the sun now stands, i will fight no more forever." who am i?
