Town With a Past Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

kgrep: OUCH! Another comprimised cache.
It's sad for us to let another cache go away, but experience tells us that muggles are never happy will a single kill. Thanks for all of the dedicated cachers willing to solve the puzzle. KGREP

Geocache Description:

This is a multi part cache…for those of you who love the thrill of the search. Along the way you will learn some interesting history about Newton, Kansas and see some of the town.

You will need to visit several historical markers to retrieve ‘clues’ that will lead you to the final coordinates. The cache itself will not be difficult to find, IF you get the clues and the final coordinates right. As you solve each clue, just substitute the appropriate number for each letter in the final coordinates, which are near the bottom of the description, right after the final clue.

The beginning coordinates of N 038.03.184 – W 097.21.046 will get you to the first historical marker. There is a small park and baseball diamond nearby; you may park there and take a very short walk to the marker.
As you read the plaque, you will be standing over the spot where many longhorn cattle were driven across Sand Creek and north along the Chisholm Trail to the railhead at Abilene, Kansas.

C = On the fourth line down from the top of the plaque, what is the last digit of the first year listed?
E = Approximately 30 feet north of the bridge is a street sign. What is the street number that runs east & west?

The next marker is located at
N 038.02.788 – W 097.20.930; you may park along the street. When the railroad came to this area, the town of Newton was born as the new railhead. Along with the rails came the rough & rowdy cowboys, saloons, wild women and bloodshed. Newton earned the reputation of being ‘bloody & lawless, the wickedest city in the west’. While reading these plaques, you will be standing on what was known as the ‘Red Light District’ of early Newton.

F = On the north plaque, what is the last digit of the year that Harvey County was incorporated?
G = On the east plaque, what is the second digit of the year in which the marker was erected?
J = On the east plaque, what is the third digit of the year in which the Harvey County courthouse was built?
H = On the west plaque, what is the first digit in the number of cattle that were herded over the trail?
D = On the west plaque, what is the third digit in the year that Santa Fe came to Newton?

The next marker is located at
N 038.02.837 – W 097.20.695; parking will most likely be available on the street just to the north (it is one-way going east).
I = The plaque notes the location of the water well that was dug in the center of a nearby intersection. One of the streets is Main. What is the other street?

The last marker is located at
N 038.03.006 – W 097.20.544: park on either Broadway or Oak. Steam locomotives of this vintage were sure to be seen, chugging down the tracks, carrying their load of longhorn cattle to market.

A = What is the last digit in the cost to build the engine?
B = The engine was taken out of service in May of 1953. Which day in May was it?

You should now have all of the coordinate numbers required to find the cache. It is located near the cemetery in which Carlos King, one of Newton’s early lawmen, was the first to be buried.

Cache coordinates are N 038.AB.CDE – W 097.FG.HIJ.
Please exercise discretion when retrieving the cache and remember to re-hide it well; many muggle children are nearby.

The cache is an ammo can containing log book and pen. Original contents were Red Rover the Travel Bug, a set of jacks, Mardi Gras beads, magnetic monkey page clips, a silver bell, 2 OFF wipes, a CAT can koozie and a key ring.
