Geocache Description:

This is now a traditional stand alone cache.

The Battle of Preston took place in 1648, in Walton-le-Dale, near Preston, where Cromwell had a decisive victory over the Scottish army led by the Duke of Hamilton.
After this rout, a battle which might have precipitated the trial and execution of Charles I, Hamilton withdrew his troops towards Wigan and set up camp at Standish. Cromwell followed in pursuit. Local legend has it that Cromwell stopped and drank from the Hic Bibi well and left the inscription ‘Here I drink’.
More probably it should be ‘Hic bibe’ meaning ‘drink here’. This spelling is recorded in a map dated 1763 and suggests that the water here was good for drinking.
