You'll take a short but steep hike into a canyon behind the town
of Hyde Park. Beyond the point where the road becomes REALLY
difficult for passenger cars, the canyon opens up, and splits into
two main forks. In spring, there is a small stream, flowers, and
grass. This canyon is popular with hikers, campers, and target
shooters. Now we can add geocachers to the list.
The cache is on the south-facing side of the canyon, with hardly
any shade. You MIGHT find a sparse trail (made by deer) for part of
the way to the cache. The "trail" from the northeast (starting a 5
to 10 minute walk up the left-hand fork past a large fire circle
area and a lower rock outcropping on the left) skirts the cliffs
above a cave and a sharp dropoff. It's steep, but just at the
start. The "trail" that starts below or just to the west of the
cache is probably the one you'll first think of trying. It clambers
up a rocky slide area near some caves. It is steep and treacherous
the whole way, but it is shorter.
I took the east trail up to the cache and the west trail back
down. On the way down the rocks, I startled a long brown snake (or
he startled me), so watch out for wildlife.
Please be careful and stay away from the cliff edges!
Be sure to catch the Nature's Garden, Ante Meridiem Arch and
Green Great Dragon caches, not far away (as the crow flies or the
boulder falls.)
