Geocache Description:

Located at the peninsula's eastern tip. A stunning view of Greenwich Bay.

Open sunrise to Sunset. Easy hide at a small beach. Parking is available very close to the cache. Take a walk down the beach, or fish off the rock jetty.

"Potowomut" is an isolated neighborhood and a peninsula in Warwick, RI. It is an exclave, since there is no overland connection to the rest of the city of Warwick. Nathaniel Greene was born here in 1742.

The Narragansett Indians named Potowomut over three hundred years ago when they spent the growing seasons farming and fishing here. The name means "land of fires". In the 1680's, the first white settlers encroached upon the Indian lands of Potowomut.

The unusual thing about Potowomut is that you have to actually leave the City of Warwick to get to it. You do this by driving south on Route 1 (Post Road), and entering East Greenwich, then taking a left onto Forge Road where you re-enter Warwick on the peninsula known as Potowomut.

Unique to Potowomut is Goddard Memorial State Park. Goddard Park attracts thousands of visitors each year as Rhode Island’s most popular Metropolitan Park. Its facilities include a 9 hole golf course, a horse barn, a beach, sprawling open fields, and a carousel building that is used for functions. While you are in the area, check out the many caches located in Goddard Park!

~UPDATE~

May 22, 2007 - Due to the recent fire , dune grass cutting and the Rocky Hill School service project (cleaning up a nearby planter) in the area of the cache, I have moved the cache to a more secure location!

Since the cache has moved to a new location, re-finds are welcome!
