Geocache Description:

This cache is located roughly half a mile from the car park in Sandend. Terrain is unsuitable for pushchairs but will be no problem for kids and adults. Dogs should be on a lead once off the beach as there are fields with sheep in the area.

Wayhey, Sandend Stash is back up and running so lets hear a big cheer! This replaces the original Sandend Stash cache although the Mk2 version is not that far from the original location

Located in Aberdeenshire, the village of Sandend lies 3 miles (5km) west of Portsoy on one of the most popular sandy beaches in the area. Settlements here date back to the early 17th Century, although the harbour is of 19th century origin. Fishing has left the village but fish processing is still undertaken here. West of the village lies Logie Head, Sunnyside Bay and the remains of Findlater Castle.

Follow the directions to Sandend, turning off the A96 between Portsoy and Cullen. Enter the village and head straight over the small bridge. Parking can be found just beyond the Caravan Site entrance, coordinates are N57.40.964 W002.44.927.

Start off at the small information board and follow the path down onto the beach. I recommend wellies and/or decent waterproof footwear as there are two small water features, where streams empty onto the beach, to cross en route to the cache. Head east along the beach aiming for the two World War 2 gun emplacements at the far end of the bay (mums and dads – you could try and get the kids to count the amount of anti-tank blocks along the way, not as easy as it looks!). Climb the small steps to these gun positions. Note how these were placed to hide them from offshore naval artillery bombardment and were sighted to fire across the beach rather than out to sea, hopefully to disrupt or stop any seaborne landings along this stretch of land. At the large gun site follow the track to the right of it. Once you are over the small rise aim in the direction of the small wooden bridge passing over a stream (slippery when it has been raining). Once across the bridge follow the grass path to the left along with your GPS directions to the cache.
