A short walk uphill from the cycleway through a very overgrown path, the cache is unfortunately not suitable for bicycles, buggies or wheelchairs (Handicache rating = H34342)) - cyclists make sure that you take a lock to secure your bike. The railway line which also runs the length of the cylepath is useful for securing your bike –if you have not been here before don’t’ worry, it’s disused!
As the cache is hidden in an avenue of woodland satellite reception is not good. However, as the woodland is very narrow you can use the public footpath at the edge of the field to the left when going uphill and try a combination of dead reckoning and your cache hunting skills to locate it – there would be no fun without a challenge would there?! Please be aware that there are nettles in this area so you might want to wear long trousers or take a stick to get to/from this path – there are no nettles or similar nasties at the cache site.
The cache container and contents were originally placed here by Unruely who decided not to activate it thinking the location was not very good. Having returned to the States this generous cacher offered it to me when I helped clear one of his other caches. On retrieving the cache I was impressed by its challenge, proximity to the Colliers Way and the views from the footpath beside the cache so have decided to leave it there – if you think it’s good credit Unruely, if you don’t like it blame me!
Access
Whilst the cache is to the East of the Colliers Way you need to leave the cycleway to the West and go through the access tunnel under the line to access it - see additional waypoints below. Leave the cycletrack at the steps beside the small sewage works (hold your nose!) or via the Kilmesdon cycle/wheelchair access ramp which is about 100 yards further Southwest. If you are caching and dashing there is parking for one car by this tunnel but you are advised to park in the village car park and walk here. Go through the tunnel and the cache is up the hill near this track. However, as suggested above, once through the tunnel you may find it best to follow the public footpath at the edge of the field to your left until you are near the cache – happy hunting!
