Geocache Description:

I placed this cache in its hiding place on the 4th of July, 2006…a day of celebration for the independence of this great country of ours. A couple of the reasons I feel this country of ours is so great is due to the superior technology of our military as well as the sacrifices made by our men and women in uniform. On the inside of the cache, I placed a wooden nickel which includes the phrase, “Our freedom is not free.” I hope that will be a gentle reminder to all of us what has been performed without any of us asking.

The name of this cache was derived from a Military Specification, MIL-D-6055, which is the MIL-SPEC for Resusable Metal Drums for Shipping and Storage (Capacity 88 to 510 cubic inches). The cache that you are searching for meets these specifications as they are outlined in significant detail. Each different part of this drum has a Military Standard Part Number:

o MS-24347-5 Overall Drum Assembly
o MS-24347-25 Container Body
o MS-24347-42 Cover
o MS-24347-62 Locking Ring
o MS-24347-82 Gasket

This particular drum that I used for purposes of this cache has 282 cubic inches of storage. I encourage you to perform a Google search to read about the endless details that are involved with the military specifications of this drum (keyword “MS24347-42” seems to work well). Just imagine the military specifications involved with the overall assembly of an F-22A Raptor stealth fighter!! When I was working on the electro-optics of the first Raptor prototype (known then as the YF-22), I had to pass through 2 highly secured doors to enter the 3 feet thick concrete bunker to access the Engineering Drawings and related MIL-SPECS. That was not so long ago when there was no Adobe Acrobat Reader or .pdf files……..everything was paper….lots and lots of paper…rooms full of filing cabinets and paper.

This particular drum used for this cache came back with a friend of mine who served in Operation Desert Storm. He was on the USS Eisenhower Aircraft Carrier and this drum housed a Power Supply used on one of the aircraft that flew sorties over Baghdad from the USS Eisenhower. He encouraged me to use it for purposes of geocaching and introduce a cache type that was different than most of the other caches just to mix things up a little.

Please note the small tool kit that accompanies this cache. You will need to use the contents of this tool kit to open and close the cache. If you want the drum to be MIL-SPEC approved after you close it, you will need to tension the hardware with the supplied tools to a minimum torque pressure of 4 foot-pounds +/- 0.5 foot-pound. If your wrist’s torque abilities have not been calibrated within the last year then you can simply tighten until snug. [:-)]

This cache will require a little bit of patience since it involves some disassembly and reassembly. To the geocachers who are in pursuit of a ‘record number of caches’ found in one day….you might want to skip this one for another time.

The original contents included:
o 2 CITO trash bags
o Flower Pot with Lil’ Chick stuffed animal
o Silly Putty
o Bend-O-Man
o 2 Books
o 1 Patriotic Pin
o 1 Thumb Popper
o 1 PEZ Dispenser
o 1 Egg Shaker Toy
o Cinderella

CONGRATULATIONS TO 'BOB & DODY' WHO WERE THE FTF!!
