Geocache Description:

This is the eighth in my series of hides near fire lookouts. Here you will find Goodman Ridge Lookout, 5218', in the Umatilla National Forest.

Last used regularly as a lookout in the 1970's, the present 67' treated timber tower was constructed in 1936. It had a 6x6' observation cab on top, but it blew off during the winter of 2007-2008. The ground cabin living quarters were burned by fire crews in October 2009. At one time there also used to be a garage which has since departed. Time and vandalism have taken their toll. The tower is unsafe to climb (bottom stairs removed), so you'll have to enjoy what view there is from the ground.

It might be interesting to speculate why a tower was built here rather than on the higher summit of Black Mountain a mile to the west, which essentially blocks the entire view from Goodman in that direction. With south being about the only way you can see standing on the ground, I have no reference about the view in other directions.

Directions: take Forest Road 31 either from Highway 204 13 miles to the south or from Interstate 84 Exit 243 27 miles to the north. Turn onto the 3128 Road and go approximately 6 miles to the 062 spur. The last half mile isn't steep but it is very rocky, so walking would be a good option for those lacking puncture-proof tires. The area is just off of a snowmobile route so winter access can be attempted, although finding it then might prove a challenge.

You're seeking a round, clear plastic container with a logbook, pencils and a few trading items.

Also be sure to log the benchmark directly under the center of the lookout tower. There was apparently another one up here as well but I have never been able to locate it, so I consider it is destroyed.
