In Praise of
Derriere
der•ri•ère also der•ri•ere
(der'e-âr')
n. The part of one's back on which one sits.; the rear; the rump.
[from Old French deriere, in back of, behind]
Despite the unfortunate,
but necessary "potty-talk", this easy 2-stage geocache is designed
to be kid and family-friendly. There are elements for both old and
young, so please involve some young'uns, and bring them
along for a whiff of derriere! (Kid accompaniment required
for "First to Find" credit--Carels: young at heart doesn't count)
Note: While definitely NOT a paper-less geocache,
1 small square* is all you'll need to
wipe this one off your list!
Location
info:
This
derriere-featuring establishment is a community institution. It all
started on "The Branch", where property was purchased in 1887. The
2nd family owner produced and delivered products from 1908 to 1947.
The current family owner purchased the location in 1970, and
expanded the business to include what's there now. The owner
operates the business the same way he talks; slow and steady. "You
never know what each day will bring," he says. "Some days can get a
little hectic".
Now in his
eighties, the owner still arrives at work at about 9 a.m., takes
care of matters there, then heads over to help at other parts of
the business. In the evening, he goes back to work, and stays until
about 11:30 at night. The toughest part of the business, he says,
is making sure things are done just the way he wants. Judging by
the amount of repeat business he attracts, he's been doing
something right.
Today, his
"staff" of over 400 spread across 7 nearby locations, work their
fannies off to create their famous products, with much (most?) of
it ordered by out-of-state customers.
To log this
cache:

(Puzzle may look more complicated than it is!)
- Print the
puzzle image. Click on it to view
it in a separate browser window, and print from there (Be sure
to do a print preview to make sure the entire image is
visible).
- Have a kid
assemble the geo-puzzle.
- Take
puzzle (and the kid) with you to
stage 1 and solve stage 2 coords (A,
C).
- Find
cache and enjoy the surroundings while
reading the more complete location
history provided in the cache (use
stealth as needed!)
Important:
- Puzzle
updated and simplified (7/25/06)
- Digits A, C
revealed at Stage 1
- Not all
numbers on the geo-puzzle are used! Some are only there to distract
those attempting to discover coords w/out building
puzzle

Geo-puzzle
assembly:
- Cut out the design along
the gray line so it is square (accuracy
helps).
- Fold the square in half
lengthwise, then crosswise, then unfold it. There should be a
"cross" in the middle of the paper.
- Place paper with design
face-down.
- Fold each corner in so
that all 4 corners meet at the cross in the center. You should see
the geocaching.com logo in the center.
- AGAIN, place the folded paper with
design face-down.
- Fold in each corner again
so that the corners meet in the center. Now fold the whole thing in
half first lengthwise, unfold, then fold crosswise and unfold, with
the parts of the geocaching.com logo showing on the
outside.
- Place both thumbs and both
forefingers in the pockets formed by the logo.
