Geocache Description:

This cache is meant to replace a cache that has recently been archived.

The original “Nicolissa” cache, by Team Overland, was in a very interesting spot. I was asked if I knew what the site was in the past. I didn’t know so I started to ask around and this is what I found.

When you went to the original “Nicolissa” cache you found yourself on an island in the middle of the Cowskin creek. While walking on this island you may notice a stone retaining or basement wall. In the 1920s, this island was the site of a speakeasy. A speakeasy is an establishment that was used for the selling and drinking of illegal alcoholic beverages. The term was originally used around the late 1700s, where it referred to a smuggler’s hideout. It came to mean an illegal drinking establishment in Pittsburgh in the late 1880s, when clients were told to “speak easy” if they wanted to buy illegal liquor.

After Prohibition was repealed by the Twenty first Amendment in 1933, it was rumored moonshine was made on the site until the mid to late 1960s. I was told when the building on the site was torn down in the 1990s, the basement still contained wooden kegs of moonshine.

Be prepared for a little bushwhacking.

The best place to park is to the West, on the North side of Maple. Entrance to the site is just to the East of the West Bridge. You will be looking for a standard .50 cal. Ammo box. Please replace cache as you find it.
