Geocache Description:

This cache is located on the Appalachian Trail between Salt Log Gap and Hog Camp Gap. Best park is at Hog Camp Gap. Take Hwy 60 west from Amherst or east from I-81 to SR 634. Go north to Hog Camp Gap at N 37 45.580 W 79 11.710 where you'll find a small parking area. This is the same parking as for Cole/Cold Mountain (GCTV8G). From the park you head north to Tar Jacket Ridge and south to Cole Mountain. Hike is about 0.65 miles one way with about 250' of elevation increase.

[Note: we have had to move away from the area and can no longer maintain this cache. If someone would like to adopt it, please contact us.] Tar Jacket TNG (the next generation) is a replacement for the old Tar Jacket Cache that was recently archived. The old cache was a total loss and we didn't want to see this lovely ridge without a cache. The new cache is in a completely different location, fairly close to the highest point on the ridge. When you find the cache, be sure you continue on up the mountain about another 200 feet for a lovely open view on your right. It's a great place to sit and have lunch. (This assumes you're coming from Hog Camp Gap. If you're coming from Salt Log Gap, then you've already passed it.) Container is an ammo can.

Original cache contents:
$10 Walmart gift card (Pirates of the Carribean) for FTF, plus insect repellent, an insect head net, an emergency poncho, a handheld fan for hot days, four AA batteries, a bookmark and an inflatable wine bucket. We also left a set of kitchen sized garbage bags. Please take one and stick it in your pack for the next time you find trash along a trail. In addition, we left a Geocoin that we picked up the other day and a new travel bug, Pinky the Geopoodle.
