Bakke church is a beautiful octogonal wooden church in
Trondheim (there is another church quite like this one, the
Hospitalskirka near Hospitalsloekka, built in 1705).
The church is built in 1741-1715 by architect J. C. Hempel after
an initative from bishop Peder Krog.
(The church was, as the only building in the Bakklandet area,
saved under the swedish siege in 1718.
The original location for the church was far into todays
Innherredsveien. As traffic increased after the opening the Bakke
brigde, there was some plans for demolishing the building as
someone ment it was blocking the road. Some clever people managed
to convince the city gourvernment that it was possible to move the
curch instead.
After jacking the church and moving the church to a more safe
plateau between Innherredsveien and Kirkegata in 1939. The Bakke
church was restored and re-consecrated in 1941.
The moving of the curch with the tools and aid available at that
time is afterwards considered as beeing quite an art of
engineering
