Geocache Description:

Easy wide trail in People's State Forest

The original cache was replaced in August 2012 in the same spot. It's near a nicely done wooden bridge over Beaver Brook. You can make this find from a short walk, or check the maps and make it a good hike!

People’s State Forest is between Pleasant Valley and Riverton in the township of Barkhamsted. We suggest you print off a hiking trail map from CT DEP. There is a map posted at the Stone Museum along with a sign that says free trail maps are no longer available because of budget cuts.
Check out www.stonemuseum.org. If you haven’t been there, it’s a small but charming rustic place, built by the CCCs in the 1930s. (That’s the Civilian Conservation Corps, not the Central Connecticut Cachers!).
There are many ways into this cache which is on the Charles L. Pack trail near Beaver Brook. The Forest has miles of trails and a couple of lookouts (and another cache nearby). We are giving parking coordinates for the base of Greenwoods Road which is gated in winter but accessible by snowmobile, or by snowshoes or skis if you can handle a lot of “up.” Parking coordinates are also for the Stone Museum, and for the side-of-the-road trailhead for the shortest way in.

Nearby the cache is the Beaver Brook Swamp. Take the Agnes Bowen trail off of the Charles L. Pack trail to a difficult but doable launch area. Rocky and muddy. We have carried a heavy canoe here so lighter kayaks would be even easier. Swamp life can be fascinating!

GPS reception can be poor. We used two GPS units and were very close on each place except for the trailhead. We did our best. Again, we suggest downloading a trail map from CT DEP.
