SE Fife Coastal Path Castles: Ardross Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

allieballie: Well this one lasted a long time but I have now been told that it's no longer there. As I don't live in Fife anymore I can't replace it so it's time for this one to say farewell.

Geocache Description:

This cache series will take you to five “castles” found along the Fife Coastal Path in the south-eastern half of the Kingdom. I say “castles” because one is not a castle at all and one is not there any more!

This cache can be accessed by continuing along the coastal path from the cache at Newark Castle, or you can park at Ruby Bay car park in Elie (N56 11.246 W002 48.769 - cost £1) and approach from that direction. The distance from either of these options is approximately the same - about 0.6miles. For those of you who prefer the shorter option, it might (and I said “might” - I haven’t tried it!) be possible to reach the castle from a parking spot on the main road at N56 11.770 W002 47.810. If you choose the latter option, be sure to look over the small point before the cache to see if you can see slabs of rock below showing fossilised wave marks and a coal seam just above them.

The Fife Coastal Path passes right through the ruins of this 14th century castle. This was once the stronghold of the Dishington family, relatives of Robert I. Sir William Dishington, who also built St Monans Kirk, erected the castle in 1370 when he was sheriff of Fife. He had married a sister of Robert the Bruce.

The vaulting that you can still see today possily belonged to the castle kitchen.
