Geocache Description:

This is the first of my caches placed with cycling geocachers in mind, and is located on a nice section of up or downhill singletrack to the North of Hattonhill Shaw and South of Primrosehill Shaw near to Goring

You are looking for a small 0.4l Lock n' Seal box containing a number of small swaps.

This area has fantastic views across the Thames towards the Goring Gap from the top of the hill, and is located at the edge of a nice offroad trail, which runs downhill from the East towards Gatehampton House in the West and is frequently used by mountain bikers such as myself.

The track has a little undergrowth, but not so much that it is obstructed, and as ever in the UK, nettles may be present, though they were few and far between when the cache was placed.
The track is cycleable if you have a mountain bike with low gears, but be careful when descending as it is steep and you can get up to quite a speed, which is not a good idea as this track is open to horse riders and walkers too.

There are two points of access to this track, the first is to the West at the bottom of the hill from Gatehampton Road and the second, shorter option is from the top of the hill from an un-named road to the East.

Due to the narrow nature of both roads, parking is a bit of a problem, particularly if approaching from the West as the lower end of the track has no parking signs due to access being required by farm vehicles.

  • If approaching from the West, the preferred parking is at Goring Station, with a pleasant 2.25km (25-30 min) walk to the cache site.
  • If approaching from the East there is a small area with space for 2-3 cars where you can pull off the road near to the top of the footpath, and the cache is about 300m downhill from here.

Due to the fact that I placed this as a cyclist, I'm afraid that not a lot of thought was given to parking co-ords, but look at this as an opportunity to get out on your bike and cycle to the cache, or at least walk part of the distance, its really quite enjoyable.

The original contents of the cache were as follows:

  • First to Find Card
  • Bart Simpson Keyring
  • Frog Keyring
  • 6 brightly coloured childrens erasers
  • 2 pads of mini post-its
  • Mini Photo Frame
  • Fort William District Scouts patch

Whilst here, why not take some time to visit the lovely Hartslock Nature Reserve, which is run by the Berks, Bucks & Oxon Wildlife Trust.
This reserve has great views along this part of the Thames Valley, and is well known for its many butterflies, but is more famous for its Orchid Slope which is in full bloom in the middle of May.

More information on the Hartslock Reserve can be found at: http://www.hartslock.org.uk
You can find a selection of images taken on the reserve on my website at: http://www.adeking.co.uk/Albums/Hartslock/index.html
