Geocache Description:

Located near the intersection of Five Mile Road and US Hwy 101. Please park near the sign that reads: "Narrow winding road next 12 miles" to be sure you are out of the way of traffic. Road is wide, BE SAFE!

First let me ask some questions: Have you ever wondered just why forests are "clear cut"? Did you know that timber is one of just a few renewable natural resources? Did you know that because of our over abundant yearly rain fall, the Oregon Coast is one of the fastest timber growing areas in the world? Did you know that for every tree that is cut down, five seedlings are planted? Did you know that replanting is required within a year? And if cleared in November could be planted as early as the following March? You can not see them? Remember that Douglas Fir seedlings are about twelve inches high when planted, in 5 years the scar is gone and on an average of 40 years the crop will be ready to be harvested again.

An old adage says, "that only mushrooms grow in the dark". Selective cutting and planting in the shadows creates very slow growth, if any. Brush also if left overcrowds and limits the seedling or anything else that grows. Riparian areas are left around rivers, creeks and wet culverts. Trees with protected bird nests are advoided.

Five Mile Road area is regrowing, just like all the logging sites in Oregon. Lumber for our homes, and our childrens homes are growing and regrowing here. Please do not look at it as a scar, but as a gift that has been given to us to care for, use, grow and reuse.

The name of the cache comes from the logging trucks that you may see near this cache. The straps that hold the logs in place are called "binders". You may see a short (mule train) or long logger checking his binders. So please park near the sign that reads: "Narrow winding road next 12 miles".
