Please note: There is a landowner who lives next door
to the hall and keeps a close eye on the place, so it would be wise
to only visit this cache during reasonable daylight hours, and to
try to look as though you are doing unsuspicious things like
photographing a historical location or stretching your legs and
grabbing a paper or scoping out a place to have your parents’ ruby
wedding anniversary, etc. and to wave in a friendly manner if they
drive by - country manners!
Those of you who are familiar with the area around Leduc may
recognize the name Telford from many buildings in and around Leduc
and even the lake in town. They are all named after Robert Taylor
"R.T." Telford who was the first person to live on the spot that is
now Leduc. A very influential pioneer, he later became the first
postmaster, one of the first mayors, and eventually the first
M.L.A. for the district.
In fact, in the early days before Leduc was named it was
informally known as "Telford's Place" or simply "Telford" but when
the time came to officially name the town for the purposes of the
telegraph, the telegraph operator decreed that he would choose the
name of the first person to walk into the telegraph office. That
person was Father Hippolyte Leduc, a noted Roman Catholic
missionary in the area, and in 1899, Lieutenant Governor Dewdney of
the Northwest Territories, decreed that the settlement of Telford
should be renamed "Leduc" instead.
Luckily, Mr. Telford's name lives on in many places, including
on the two buildings you will see at this cache site (both were
built on land originally owned by Mr. Telford).
I dedicate this cache to my grandparents who celebrate their
58th wedding anniversary today. They had their 40th anniversary at
this Telford Hall and their 50th at the Telford Senior’s Centre in
Leduc and I hope they enjoy many more together!
The cache is a small camouflaged Lock 'n' Lock container
suitable for smaller trade items. At time of placing it
contains:
- Logbook, pencil & sharpener
- a small First to Find prize
- Clickits Hair Clip Kit
- Playmobil set
- a geocaching.com window decal
- Small yellow bouncy ball
- Lucky 4 leaf clover in frame
There are 2 swings at the cache and lots of room for kids to run
around and stretch their legs.
