At this location you will find a 12'
bronze statue in honor of Private
Benjamin Owens. The sculptor is a Texan named Ron Moore. Somewhere

utensil.
Pvt. Owens was born and raised in nearby West River, MD. On June 3,
1863 he
enlisted in the Confederate Army and served with the 1st Maryland
Flying
Artillery, C.S.A. Very soon after his enlistment, June 15th to be
precise,
Pvt. Owens and his gun crew were guarding a bridge at Stephens
Depot near
Winchester, VA during the Gettysburg Campaign. After all of his gun
crew were
either killed or wounded, Pvt. owens continued to man his post and
firing his cannon
until the arrival of officers and other troops to help.
After his life in the C.S.A. he returned home to Anne Arundel
county and was appointed
the Deputy County Clerk. In 1917, 54 years after enlisting to fight
in the Civil
War, Pvt. Owens passed on at the Confederate Soldiers Home in
Pikesville, MD. In 1993 the Sons of Confederate Veterans bestowed
upon Pvt.
Owens the Confederate Medal of Honor posthumously. This honor has
only been
bestowed upon 43 men and Pvt. Owens is the only one from Maryland.
During the
war the Confederate Government due to political and economic
difficulties was
unable to award medals to their soldiers but did instead publish
"Rolls of Honor"
periodically.
