Nov. 2022 DESCRIPTION for AQUILA! The cache is now a simple letterbox though you must do some bushwhacking to find it. Since 2006, the area has become much more popular. Alas this has meant that the first 2 stages described below are missing. The letterbox cache is the original ammo can. Its stamp and stamp pad still work. So enjoy the hunt and remember to leave the stamp and stamp pad in place. Keep looking for eagles!
ORIGINAL 2006 description Visit Poplar Bluffs and learn more about this area and its nearby island. Start at the coordinates above and use the traditional letterbox tradition of old fashioned navigation to get the coordinates for the final cache. The sign has changed so now you learn about Wilson Island, once called Shelby Island. Parking is available at N 52.01.672 and W 106.43.046 From the co-ordinates set your compass to 275 degrees and walk 250 feet. For the techies -- the distance was determined by 2 GPS readings! There you will find a camoflauged preform well cammoed at ground level between 2 wolf willow branches. Inside you will find 1 set of coordinates which gives you the final to the ammo cann container of the letterbox. Please return the paper with the coordinates to the preform and add them to your GPS or phone. Since stage 2 has presented some issues, the difficulty was increased in Sept. 2016. You will find the AQUILA letterbox hybrid in an ammo can. Keep our eagle stamp in place and share you own stamp in the log book. If you don't have one, think creatively - a decorated thumb print or dog print etc! A letterbox encourages you to place our stamp in your own own log book and vice versa. In the winter you may need to bring your own marker in case our stamp pad is frozen! There are also cache items to trade if you are interested. Just FYI AQUILA stands for eagle in Latin. Both Bald and golden eagles are occasionally in the area! This letterbox hybrid has 3 parts- navigating from the published co-ordinates to the cammoed preform which originally was a film container and then a bison tube containing the actual coordinates and finally hiking across country to the cache! ENJOY! You might enjoy the view from the sandbar found most easily by a path starting at N 52.01.797 and W 106.42.972 To learn more about the venerable tradion of letterboxing visit the WEB. Contents: Log Book, pen, pencil, stamp pad and AQUILA stamp in large plastic envelope. Please return together and seal. FTF certificate and stamp series with pad STF ice cream stamp Callaway golf ball found while setting up the cache! Dog key chain Smiley lanyard (perhaps fornearby Smiley Face cache!) small whisk 2 small basketballs 50 Mexican pesos Canadian flag Ski patrol tag The starting coordinates were changed on July 27, 2014 to accomodate the erosion in the area.
