This is a long hike up difficult terrain without a trail.
The cache is at the top of Signal Peak in the Robledo Mountains of Southern New Mexico. It is only about 1.4 miles from Hwy 185 but you can't get there from here.
We took Hwy 185 North past the Blue Moon Bar for about 1/2 mile and turned South (left) on the first main dirt road. It's named "Canyon" something. We turned left on a small, almost hidden jeep trail, about 1/4 mile past the gate. (Make sure and close the gate behind you.) We parked the truck and started up the arroyo. After a few hundred yards we climbed up the steep slope on the left to the ridge line and along the ridge line until we could see the first saddle. We were spending the night so we camped on the saddle, about 3/4 of a mile from the truck.
From the saddle, hike down, yes down, to the valley and then up to the long flat plateau to the right. Take the middle ridge up. It is steep, and then follow the ridge line to the top. It took us about 2 hours total to hike from the truck up and about 1 1/2 hours down. While we camped overnight, it can be done in a day. Take plenty of water.
The cache is a metal cylinder. Orignial contents include matches, some coins, and an antique spur we found on the way up.
Signal Peak was used by the Buffalo Soldiers stationed at Fort Seldon in the valley to communicate with other forts through the use of large mirrors. It now has antennas and an incredible view of the Rio Grande River Valley.
