A 3 stage multi along the Sawmill Valley Trail, in the area known as Ivor Woodlands. Very popular with walkers and cyclists. Posted coords are for Stage 1. The final is in an area bordering the former Winding Lane Bird Sanctuary. CAUTION: POISON IVY in the area.
Roy Ivor was a world famous naturalist and ornithologist who founded the Winding Lane Bird Sanctuary in Erindale in 1928 and dedicated his life to studying and healing sick birds. The “Birdman of Mississauga” welcomed visitors and school children to learn about birds and wildlife. In 1970, a fire destroyed his home and soon after that we visited the sanctuary, meeting Mr. Ivor and the many birds in his care. We recall seeing his fridge filled with dead rodents injected with vitamins for the birds, but there was little food for himself. He died in 1979, shortly before his 100th birthday, and is buried at the cemetery of St. Peter’s Anglican Church in Erindale. The Globe and Mail wrote on the aftermath of the fire of December 1970: “He was a man who made sick birds well; the man who was often seen walking through the woods with a bald eagle, one wing crooked, hopping along at his side. Here was a man who knew a lot about nature before ecology entered the popular vocabulary- a man with a reverence for living things”. The City of Mississauga purchased the property in October, 2010 and plan to incorporate it into the trail system. There is very limited parking on Sundays only on Mississauga Road close to the first stage. Access alternate parking off Dundas Street: Closest parking to Stage 1: N 43.32.578 W079 39.821 but with enforced day time restrictions September 1 to April 30. Additional parking nearby on Sir John’s Homestead. Please take care to replace all hides exactly as found. Due to possible poor signal in areas, hints are very specific. Stage 1: Micro/small. Check out the historical information on the nearby plaque, in the stone wall. Stage 2: Micro Final: Regular: Seat and handle provided. If you are returning to the suggested parking and exit the main trail using the bridge near the final, you will pass the historic building mentioned on the plaque at Stage 1.
