Hospital Relief 5 - Tavistock Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Hamian Explorers: This cache just keeps on going missing, often straight after I replace it, so with regret, I am now archiving it. Sorry to those who have searched and did not manage to get their smiley faces.

Geocache Description:

This Hospital Relief Series will be an easy series of caches to bring some relief from a visit to the hospital. We all know how boring (all that waiting and hanging around), intense and exhausting these visits can be. The idea behind these caches is to have something interesting to look forward to either before, during or after the visit.

This cache is placed near the hospital in Tavistock. There used to be two railway lines in Tavistock. One was the Great Western Railway and the other the South Western Railway. Each had their own station. Only the South Western one is still standing, as a private house, near the Viaduct. A small part of the old South Western line in Tavistock has been made into a nature reserve.
In those days you had workers checking the railway lines every single day. Because they worked together in groups (gangs), they used to be called 'gangers'. There were special huts where they could meet up, have their food and a warm drink, and, especially important in winter, where they could keep warm. These huts were called 'line-side huts' or 'gangers huts'. They were made of wood, with large stone fireplaces.

Our cache is near the remains of one of these huts; only the chimney is still standing.

The closest point to enter the railway track when coming from the hospital is from the coords given below. Because reception is very poor in that area, we are giving instructions as to how to get there.

Park near the hospital, and walk up the hill towards Launceston. Take the next turning to the left, just past an old well. This is a little road, with steps on the right hand side. Take this and follow that path down to the old railway line. Turn right onto the track, and walk till you come across the remains of the gangers hut, approx 60 meters past the bridge, on your left.

At the time of placement, the cache was a model of how a gangers hut used to look like. When that one disappeared, I managed to get my hands on another one, but when that one disappeared very soon after, I decided it was becoming too difficult and expensive to source. So now, unfortunately, the cache is just a simple, boring micro.
