Hej Gavia-SGCD!

Toa Norik, reviewer

Geocache Description:

This cache is located in the vicinity of (i närheten av) the Grimmered Village (Grimmereds by),
to secure good signal reception.
It’s also a less public hiding place than in the actual village.

Park in the guest parking lot. Go and find the cache and then, you just must, take a walk through the Village before you leave.
Dear geocacher, please, re-hide the cache in its proper position and in EXACTLY the same way you found it, “camouflaged”!
Snälla rara geocachare, återplacera cachen på sin rätta plats och på EXAKT samma sätt som du fann den, ”kamouflerad”!

The cache is a 0,16 litre transparent Xeonic container,
and had the following content from start:

  • Cache log
  • Pencil
  • A picture of my Smashing GeoCaching Dogs (SGCD) (NB, not a trading object! If you want a picture of the SGCD send me an e-mail and I will send you a picture!)
  • One mountaineer’s snap-hook-key ring
  • One pencil sharpener (children stile)
  • One mini-mini brass goblet (bägare)
  • Two erasers (children stile)
The cache is placed here because I want to show you a little "rudiment" of our history.

The name Grimmered is mentioned for the first time in the 1550s. The name originates from the Danish male name “Grime” and the ending “röd” (“red”, “ryd”) which means “röjning” in Swedish (“clear land” in English), that is “the land that Grime cleared” (“marken Grime röjde”).

The Grimmered village has been a place lived in for several hundred years and still when the “modern” Grimmered village was formed in the mid 1800s, this place were really far out in the countryside outside Göteborg.

Today it is, since a long time, incorporated with Göteborg and “hidden” among modern houses, traffic routes and close industries, more or less unknown to the public!

Grimmered Village consisted of, from the beginning, seven farms in a very “dense” village and four of those farm-houses is still to be seen in the village and one of the barns is still there too.

This very “dense” village shows the need of village community, but also the main reason for building such a “narrow” village, it was easier to defend from intruders. It also reflects the old farm villages from the Swedish medieval period, when it was prohibited to erect buildings on arable ground (odlingsbar mark).

When the process of parcelling out estates (laga skiftet) took place 1844 to 1846, the process was not, for some reason, carried out concerning the village and the farmhouses, just the land, and therefore we still can see this unique little undivided village (en unik oskiftad by)

The oldest house in the “modern” Grimmered Village was erected 1857, but all were erected in the late 1800s. One of the farms were farmed as late as up to 1962.

Byns sista jordbruk lades ner 1962.

All facts gathered from different publications from Västra Frölunda Hembygdsförening (the VF home district association).
