I know what you're thinking, "Geeze, not another cemetery cache!"
Well, I have my reasons for placing a cache at this particular
location. Read on...
The murders of Robert, Mary, and Nancy Massie are a dark part of Lawrence County history and lore. The purpose of this cache is to bring the visitors face-to-face with the victims of these senseless crimes. The following are newspaper excerpts published in the days following the murders:
“Lying face downward in a clump of weeds, the back of his head reduced almost to a pulp, Robert Massie, aged 48, one of the wealthiest farmers of Lawrence County was found a few yards from the front door of his home on Greasy Ridge, Friday morning by John Clary a neighbor. Within the house, Clary found Mrs. Nancy Ann Massie, aged 76, mother of the farmer, her head crushed and Mary Ann Massie, aged 44, a sister, with her throat cut. All were dead when found.”
- Gallipolis Daily Tribune, Friday, May 15, 1914
“At 10:45 there was at least 3,500 people around the church and the four roads leading away from the little building were choked for a mile in every direction with automobiles and rigs.”
- Gallipolis Daily Tribune, Friday, May 22, 1914

The Massies' story is also chronicled in Danny Faulks' collection of short stories: "Tragedy on Greasy Ridge."
The Massies were laid to rest in a cemetery behind the Greasy Ridge Baptist Church (now the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church) at the intersection of Greasy Ridge and Rt. 775. This is where you will find the cache. It’s a waterproof match holder hidden within 20 feet of the Massies’ graves. The cemetery has a gated fence around it, but it’s unlocked. Please respect the normal dawn-to-dusk cemetery hours, and practice CITO if needed.
