Roller Mill Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

The Inkwell: After much discussion, Mrs. Inkwell and I have decided to let this one go. It's an awesome place to hide a cache but the time has come to open the area back up for others to use if they wish. Thanks to all who have visited over the years! We appreciate you taking the time to go after the cache! We'll be taking a long look at many of our caches over the coming months and deciding whether or not to keep them going, as we've got a ton of ideas for new caches and don't want to hide more than we can actively maintain; we don't want to be those folks. Happy caching!

Geocache Description:

*Edit - We meant to mention this when placing the cache, but this isn't the best spot for small children of pets. We've explored the remains of the mill many times over the years and haven't had any problems, but please be careful. The cache is located downstream, so you won't have to search through the ruins to find it. Unfortunatley, there is evidence of the mill being a "party" spot for some of the locals, hence to reports of some garbage in the area. That being said, we still feel this spot is worthy of a geocache.*

This cache is located on public access land along the 18 mile creek. Specifically, this cache is located at the New York historical site of the old Roller Mill.

The Roller Mill in Newfane, NY was built in 1835 by Hon. George R. Davis of Troy, NY. The mill is not in the greatest of shape, but quite a bit of the structure is still standing. Unfortunately, much of the remains have been defaced by graffiti.

The parking spot for this cache is off of Ewings Rd., in Newfane, NY At the end of a guard rail, there is small gravel pull-off with room for maybe 2 cars; you should be able to see the sign for the mill from the parking area. The coordinates for this spot are N 43 16.791, W 078 42.459. Someone's home is right next door, so please respect their privacy and just follow the path leading to the creek from the parking area. You are searching for a small container (larger than a film canister, but not big enough for trade items). It is well hidden, but in an obvious geo-spot. You'll get great views of the creek and mill on this hunt.
